Jahrgang 1929

Garrett Putman Serviss was an American astronomer, astronomy popularizer, and early science fiction author. He majored in science at Cornell and joined the staff of The New York Sun newspaper in 1876, where he worked as a journalist until 1892. Serviss demonstrated a talent for explaining scientific details in a way that was understandable to the average reader, prompting Andrew Carnegie to invite him to deliver The Urania Lectures on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related topics in 1894. Serviss delivered these lectures on a two-year tour across the United States. In addition, he wrote a syndicated newspaper column about astronomy and other sciences.
